At Puri Dajuma, the celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day on August 17 is particularly poignant due to the presence of the monument dedicated to national hero Ngurah Rai on the beach. Ngurah Rai, a key figure in Bali’s fight for independence, is honored with special ceremonies, including a wreath-laying and a moment of silence at the monument. The day begins with a flag-raising ceremony, where the Merah Putih flies proudly, followed by cultural performances highlighting Balinese traditions. This week Indonesia celebrated 76 years of independence. All over the archipelago were taking place joyful celebrations. In our place where Dajuma is located, it takes on a special meaning because it is the place where Colonel N’Gurah Rai landed with his soldiers to fight against the Dutch army. It was in 1946 a year after the proclamation of independence. Since then, the whole Indonesian nation remembers this courageous officer who, with disregard for his own life and despite limited military resources, succeeded in changing the order of things. A great lesson in courage!
